It’s Tuesday, Nov. 11, and here’s what’s happening in Wisconsin and across the Civic Media network today.
Communities across Wisconsin are saluting our veterans.
In Wisconsin Rapids, VFW Post 2534 held their annual Veterans Day Eve spaghetti dinner. In Oshkosh, folks partnered with Westside Fire Fitness Camp in a “Sweat for Vet” fundraiser to send eight veterans on an Old Glory Honor Flight to D.C. In South Milwaukee, the community’s newest mural honoring local veterans will host a dedication ceremony during its Veterans Day celebration.
November 11 started as Armistice Day in 1919, but officially became Veterans Day in 1954. That change is thanks to Marinette County native Harvey Higley, a World War I veteran who later became administrator of Veterans Affairs and dedicated his life to reshaping the holiday to honor all veterans. Find more on that story from Civic Media’s Teri Barr here.
Despite this connection, Wisconsin is the only state in the nation where Veterans Day is not an official state holiday. A group of Democratic lawmakers is now looking to change that, with a new “Veterans Promise” proposal.
We’ll have more to celebrate and honor veterans across the Civic Media network today, including this afternoon on “The Maggie Daun Show,” where Gabe Nutter, an Iraq War veteran and the Lead Veteran Advisor for the Overwatch Project, and retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Chris Ford, who serves a veteran leader at Face the Fight, will join the show to discuss military veteran mental health, suicide prevention, and ways communities can help.
